Khalwat Dar Anjuman

Khalwat Dar Anjuman

“Khilwat Dar Anjuman” means that a seeker’s heart should always be immersed in the remembrance of Allah, whether in silence, speaking, eating, or drinking, without ever letting a moment pass in heedlessness. The saints say, “A Sufi is physically with people but spiritually detached.”

Hazrat Shah Naqshband (may Allah sanctify his secret) points to the verse “Men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah” as indicative of this state. This verse, revealed about the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon them), highlights their constant remembrance and attentiveness to Allah, setting an example for future generations.

Hazrat Azizan Ali Ramitani (may Allah have mercy on him) says, “Be aware of your inner self and oblivious to external things, for such a noble trait is rare in this world.”

It is reported that when asked about the foundation of his method, Shah Naqshband (may Allah sanctify his secret) replied, “Khilwat Dar Anjuman” (Solitude in the crowd), meaning our way relies on being outwardly with creation but inwardly with God.

Hazrat Sohna Saeen (may Allah have mercy on him) often emphasized “Dast ba-kar o dil ba-yaar” (Hands in work, heart with the Beloved), advocating for lawful work with the hands while keeping the heart focused on Allah, echoing the sentiment that while one’s body may be in the marketplace, their soul remains with their Beloved, Allah Almighty.
