Terminologies

Dear friend, it’s important to know that the Exalted Naqshbandi Path is founded on certain principles, without which affiliation to the Naqshbandi order is not achieved, except as Allah wills.

These impactful and beneficial principles, famously known as Naqshbandi Terminologies, include:

  1. Hosh dar Dam (Awareness with every breath)
  2. Nazar Bar Qadam (Watching over the steps)
  3. Safar Dar Watan (Journey within oneself)
  4. Khalwat Dar Anjuman (Solitude in multitude)
  5. Yad Kard (Remembrance)
  6. Baz Gasht (Returning)
  7. Nigahdasht (Watching over)
  8. Yad Dasht (Keeping in mind)

These eight terminologies are transmitted from Khwaja Abdul Khaliq Ghijduwani, may God’s mercy be upon him. Additionally, three more terminologies were introduced by Khwaja Shah Naqshband Bukhari, may God sanctify his soul:

  1. Wuquf Zamani (Temporal pause)
  2. Wuquf Adadi (Numerical pause)
  3. Wuquf Qalbi (Heart pause)

Thus, the count of Naqshbandi terminologies totals eleven.
